Our average life expectancy is currently around 78 years in the USA. Yet, many of us are unaware that our sedentary lifestyles. Particularly, the long hours we spend sitting in chairs, are adversely affecting our health. In today’s society, sitting has become the norm, but it’s time to recognize that this isn’t normal or healthy.
The Impact of Prolonged Sitting:

Americans typically spend about an hour commuting and then 6 to 8 hours at a desk job. Relaxation often means more sitting, watching TV for several hours. Shockingly, a 14-year study involving 120,000 people revealed that sitting induces a large amount of issues. Another study verified that sitting for just 6 hours a day could decrease life expectancy by 4.8 years, lowering it to 73 years. This sedentary behavior also heightens the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, weight gain, deep vein thrombosis, muscle atrophy, and lower back pain.
The Path to Longevity:

However, there’s a brighter side. By being active, focusing on mobility, and incorporating daily walks, we could potentially add 10 years to our life expectancy, reaching up to 88 years. The docuseries “How to Live to 100” highlights this beautifully. It explores ‘Blue Zones’, regions where people commonly live to 100 or more, maintaining independence and health at this advanced age.
Adapting to a Sedentary Society: While our social structure doesn’t favor an active lifestyle, there are ways to counteract the effects of a sedentary life:
- Hourly Breaks: Take short, regular breaks from sitting. If possible, go for a walk.
- Standing Desk and Walking Treadmill: Invest in a standing desk and a walking treadmill, enabling you to work and walk simultaneously.

- Strength Training: Engage in strength training exercises, like squats, to improve mobility.

4. Cultural Practices: Emulate aspects of Asian cultures, such as sitting on the ground, to enhance physical flexibility.

5. Dietary Changes: Reduce processed foods and sugars while increasing nutrient-rich foods and healthy fats like olive and fish oils.
Changing our lifestyle doesn’t require drastic measures. It involves integrating simple, effective habits into our daily routine. The reason I dove into this topic is because I have family members who started to sit much more than I remember. I can see their health go straight down hill. I just want to help others.
